World Champions!

September 24, 2007
By

By now everybody knows the series of events.
India made 157/5.
Pakistan started the chase badly..and it looked like India were all set.
But then Misbah started doing his thing, and brought Pakistan so agonizingly close to the trophy.
But then he got ambitious, and that cheeky shot doubled the heartbeats of a billion (give or take a few) people around the world.

India are the winners of the cricket twenty20 world cup!

A major championship win after a long long time - in fact, the first one that we at americandesi have witnessed! Rare day for Indian cricket..and hopefully the harbinger of a new beginning for India. A country that went into mourning not too many months back following the ODI world cup debacle is rooting for those 11 odd heroes again.

Savor some of those post match moments again

Match highlights

(Both videos courtesy www.cricfever.com)

Shoaib Malik made things a little sour by his message to all muslims of the world, apologizing for the loss. We dont dislike pakistan. We dont dislike their religion. But if we may be allowed a question - where did religion come in? And what about all the muslims in India, who outnumber the muslims in Pak? I guess you owe them an apology now.
Shahid Afridi though touched us. As he ended his post match chat with Ravi Shastri, he left with a “Thanks Ravi Bhai”. We thought that was sweet.

Among other things. The awards started flowing for the team. BCCI announcing a 2 million USD (8 crore rupees) for the team, and a crore (rs) for Yuvraj.
We spotted Shahrukh khan in the audience. With his long hair, shades, and black outfit he so reminded us of Michael Jackson!
Harbhajan and the others dancing to Mundiyaan To looked like, well, a team that has just become world champion!

So there, we have a new and much more exciting format of Cricket. India is the new world champion. Cricket is no more a waste of time because the games are much shorter. We smell some exciting times ahead. And this reminds us of those matches in the days of Bradman, when there was no time at all and matches used to run into weeks!

Life does go on.

The other Shoaib was Shahid Afridi.
Pakistani players are normally well behaved and they do remember to be respectfull when they talk to the seniors. This is a subcontinent thing and we should be proud of it.
Nice post.I feel sad for Misbah. He played so well all through the series.

Thanks for pointing that out Prerna. Silly me..writing Shahid as Shoaib :)
And yes, even i feel a little sorry for Misbah. He really single handedly took the game away from India. Wonder what he’d be going through.

Error in the post duely corrected.
We had said Shoaib Akhtar when we meant Shahid Afridi. :)

Nice post. Both sides played very well and I am happy that we won. I am also happy that we obtained a good Captain for team India in this process. But the reasonable part of me hopes that Indian fans remember this win and the next time we lose (as it happens in sports sometimes), they don’t go around burning effigies and pelting the player’s houses.
I am a bit sad too that the Indian Hockey team did so well in the Asia Cup and won it but none of the players were adorned with cars or cash, we do have a lot of double standards regarding sports. Anyways i am glad to see that for now i have something to tell my Korean colleague who had sometime back asked me why India having such a huge population did so poorly in sports. Not any more….not any more.

Thanks Madhuri. And as much as i personally would like other sports to start getting their share of attention, it is a fact that the support base of cricket far outnumbers other sports. Till that is the case, hockey and football (and the others) will just have to come up with some really great achievements to get their dues.
Already we have Sania going strong, the Nehru Cup and the Asia Hockey cup victories. So things look good.
