Traffic in India
Youtube is turning out to be a modern day Pandora’s box. Check this out.
This video is a clipping of traffic at some intersection somewhere in India. (Any guesses what city this is?) The video is supposed to show just how bad traffic in India is. Now, frankly i thought this was pretty tame. I have seen much worse traffic.
I normally wouldn’t have given this video a second thought, but then i noticed this:
Honors for This Video:
#10 – Most Viewed (All Time) – Autos & Vehicles
#56 – Top Rated (All Time) – Autos & Vehicles
#2 – Most Discussed (All Time) – Autos & Vehicles
#6 – Top Favorites (All Time) – Autos & Vehicles
The video has been viewed, hold your breath, almost 3.5 million times so far and there were more than five thousand comments when i checked.
The comments turned out very extremely interesting. Sample these.
“that is one of the best video’s ive seen on youtube. this illustrates perfectly why we should stop putting controlled lights everywhere and just put up give way if your not in a hurry signs up. if there were lights on this junction there would be huge congestion.”
“Proud? of what ? that you cant afford traffic lights? that you are driving third world rating cars? that your country looks no better than iraq? that 90% of your country is dirt poor? that Inidians only? dream is to come to america?”
“India curry speaking shit. Indians own all the variety store in America. Everytimg I walk into a corner store I have to smell that? shit.”
“that ppl is insane, ride horses , not because im a fucking rascist , i mean, u ppl die beacause of ignorance and commmon sense, ur country should stablish a good trafic education center before giving a car-gun to the people”
Then there were some(a lot of) comments with some unmentionable language, and most were completely off topic. This makes me wonder. Is India hated so much that given any chance people jump into the free-for-all, and take out their frustrations?
It is a fact that India has a billion people in an area a third of the US. Of course there’s going to be problems. Scale up any American city to Indian dimensions and they would turn out the same way. New York is a prime example. I see the same indiscipline and filth that i have seen in Delhi or Bombay.

I do not think so. Sites like YouTube and Orkut are just vehicles for mediocre folk to take out frustrations at anything and everything. It is not just Americans commenting about India negatively here. You’ll find people from all countries abusing people from other countries, religions, cultures, etc. These folks don’t have blogs or real people who would listen to them so they vent out where they can – on sites like these. Don’t take them too seriously.
No doubt it is Hyderabad. The video makes me proud-truly we have mastered the art of cruising through the chaotic traffic.Who needs a traffic police or traffic signals(just kidding). To comment on comments-Traffic is the real concern not the comments.
Its almost like a maestro conducting music.
Its so surreal.
The positive outlook to this. The people are self disciplined. Road are very good. No one is going on wrong side. The pollutions seems under control (except those city buses). What is wrong with this.
Almost 10% of the global road traffic accidents occur in India. Much of the world wide web is full of sarcasm & mocking of the indisciplined driving on Indian roads. Unfortunately in since 60 years since independence the authorities have failed to publish a National Highway code. Licences are given to anyone who can demonstrate an ability to use the clutch-accelerator, consequently the motoer driving schools teach just that and no more. Concepts such as – blindspots, principle of MSM, the tyre & tarmac rule, 2 second gap and most improtantly giving way are not known to the average Indian driver.
This site http://driving-india.blogspot.com/ has been created with the purpose of providing driver education and training to all Indian road users. It is by far the most comprehensive website providing training in defensive driving. Learning simple road habits can make our roads safe and also free up congestion caused by traffic chaos.
At present 17 driver education videos aimed at changing the driving culture on Indian roads are available. The video are unique in that the footage is real life action from streets of London. We have copied the Western habits: Replaced the dhoti with denim, high rise buildings for Indian cottages, burgers and coke instead of Indian breads and perhaps sugarcane juice. Surely we can copy the Western ways of travelling too.

went I went to india, I think i avoided over 20 accidents by sheer luck!
Its really a terrific situation out there, the traffic signals is present but who know its glowing or not and how many ppl are following it. I have been to India once, I find this as a place in hyderabad which has similar kind of buses available, what they call bus!!
Its now more necessary for the Indians to learn traffic rules and make themselves undergo some defensive driving classes and follow traffic rules for their own life.
But its not the case now. The Traffic regulation seems to be getting better in India.
definitely hyderabad.
