To Be Or Not To Be
I am considering going Big…getting my own website and doing a whole lot of fancy stuff with it. Just wanted your take on this…yes yes you reader..i am talking to you there.
What do you think?
Would be very interested in hearing from people who have made a similar switch from Wordpress to their own blog. People who didn’t make the switch? Would i lose everything (my readers, my pagerank(!?) etc)?
Any tips?
Any recommended hosting services?
Above all, would you still read the blog? Visit more often?

HI! Congrats on thinking about making the big step!
About two years ago I started http://www.alaivani.com – I had (still have) a lot of my original website on http://members.tripod.com/~jennifer_polan/ that I had been maintaining since 1997.
My husband chose DNN as a platform at godaddy as a hosting. I like godaddy, seems to work well. Haven’t had problems. DNN was chosen because besides blogs it can do so much more- that I have yet to do—-DNN can be difficult and upgrades are cumbersome.
Somethings I don’t like about DNN- the only place for keeping the archives is on the blog front page- which I don’t prefer, also when someone registers and signs in it doesn’t go back to the page you were looking at- comments are difficult to leave in that case unless you don’t care if people register to leave comments, also some java and other scripts can clog up the system and shut the site down. Care needs to be taken with that. Also for tutorials and guides it is very costly…
Far as readers, I am unsure how many I really lost or gained. In addition to my site, I had a yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jayanthishomepage/) for sending update newsletters past 7 years so that kept a steady stream of readers to move to my new domain. After opening alaivani.com, I linked many pages on tripod over to alaivani, and especially in regards to the main page and the most popular articles on that site had been moved to alaivani with links to the new site. I notice from site stats that people do actually click into alaivani from tripod. But, far as page rank, I can’t comment on blog site as a whole. I had page ranks on certain article on Tripod (Story of Diwali and Pongal did have #1 rank on google, but when I moved those articles to alaivani, I have lost rank.) I noticed though over a period of time depending on the nature of the article (if it is timeless in nature or not based on current events) that the rank slowly and steadily increases back to the place it was before.
I like your blog and subscribe to it in google reader and will continue to follow it!! I suggest if you do open a new site of your own, don’t get rid of this blog – have it link up to your new URL….
Hope this is helpful … sorry so long!!
Jennifer

As far as I know, your PageRank goes for a toss and you will have to restart all over again. (If anyone knows a workaround, please enlighten me). Shifting from WP.com to Wp.org is extremely easy – just a few minutes worth of work. The themes will take longer. Actually, read about my experience.

Isn’t it first and foremost about the commitment to feeding the monster you create?
Answers to most of your questions will flow from this question. I do find it tedious to type in my name, email etc for non-WP blogs. I make some exceptions but not too many. Content of interest is the eventual determinant.

Aww Shefaly…its my baby not a monster.
Actually, the fact that i am doing all this should show my commitment to the blog.
Thanks for making the exception..i know making the switch from wordpress.com’s sheltered environment does make some things harder, but there are too many features that i (think i have) gained.
Hopefully this site will turn out the way i envision…stay tuned!

It’s not necessary to lose your page rank and contents.
You can find tutorials that will do it for you. If you want, go to Paul’s Cafe Philos, where I had advised him on the link. You will have to find the initial posts after he shifted to WP.
