Here’s some of the prominent happenings from India this past week.
Varun Gandhi continued to hog the headlines. After his anticipatory bail expired on Mar 29, he surrendered in Pilibhit. Only it wasn’t quite peaceful. Following a violent protest by his supporters, the UP government invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against him.
Now that he has been booked under the NSA, it looks like he will be contesting the elections from behind bars.
Meanwhile, Raj Thackeray revived his anti north India campaign at an election rally in Nashik, and was subsequently booked for his hate speech.
The Indian cricket team clawed their way back into the second New Zealand test to bat out the last two days to save the test, thanks to gritty innings from Gambhir and Laxman, who provided some fireworks towards the end.
After weeks of contention over the status of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the tournament was finally shifted out of India. South Africa is going to host the league this year.
The Australian tennis federation requested to move their Davis cup tie out of India for security reasons. Is India the new Pakistan?
Tata Nano, the $2000 car was launched this week amidst immense hype. Initial reviews were positive – the car does indeed come with a full set of (four) wheels, and yes, there is an engine.

The Nano is quite a looker. Not only because of the hype it has generated, but because the car looks really good. It looks far more expensive than it is and that itself is half the battle won. [link]
The only issue now is that where will the millions of little Nanos run? Are the Tatas also going to launch a new set of roads for these cars? What about all the pollution? How about some environmental consciousness? Can India really afford a car in every home?
Shyam Saran, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Special Envoy for Nuclear Issues and Climate Change hinted that India might sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
This week India successfully tested a new version of the supersonic Brahmos missile where it all began. Pokhran.
Modern day Mother Teresa, Angelina Jolie might soon add an Indian child to her ark family. Three cheers for India.
Signing off with this MIA music video – Boyz. Figured it would be a better start to the week than a news clip.

Angelina adopting another kid. Hey more power to her and Brad. They seem happy, the kids seem happy. What more could we ask for. At the very least she is willing to do something, most of us do not even consider. So, a few of the adopted kids will have a better life, as Hindus should we not feel happy that another soul has such opportunities presented that are simply impossible in an orphanage. Who are we to make fun of the children/parents?
As for the Nano, how easy it is for us to talk about world pollution when we refuse to sign the Kyoto Treaty and think that the Hummer is the ultimate car to buy and barely even acknowledged the lights-out that even major shopping areas of the world observed. It is for the Indian public to demand better roads. That will come with civic pride and when the middle class most affected by the corruption will start voting. Till then sab chalta hai attitude will continue.

Whenever i read you TWTW, i recall Prannoy Roy’s TWTW many years ago. That was the launch pad for this behemoth called NDTV now !
Small beginnings..
Now, are you seeing some possibilities there !?!

I wonder what will news look like if Raj Thackeray asks for their states representation (may be from NasHik) in AJs ark…he he.
Also I heard AJ and Brad had a fight…but thats no wonder. It was only time before they did.
BTW My3: we did turn off the lights of our home as much as possible, lets say ..even little drops can help when thirsty.

@Poonam – Its very interesting, all this buzz around Varun Gandhi. I am not sure if he did anything that hasn’t been done over all these years by our more established politicians.
@My3 – I am all for adoption of kids…just not how she is going about it. It’s not a child she wants…she wants an ‘Indian’ child. Next week it will be a Malaysian child. It would seem like this is not about social work, just publicity for a very media obsessed celebrity. Besides, celebrity households are not really famous for classy upbringing of children.
You gave a completely different angle to my point about the Nano. All i am saying is that Indian roads are already bursting at the seams. What would happen when suddenly there are millions of Nanos running around adding to the congestion. Road rage? two hour commutes becoming three hour?
@Naperville Mom – Good luck
@Kavi – You are awesome. Your comment made my day.
This blog is a far cry from being a behemoth, but i don’t think i would mind some success.
@Solilo – Bingo. That’s the method we need to adopt. Quick, impartial justice.
Teach the b*stards a lesson before they can go about twisting the law.
@AmListening – haha
Glad to know you contributed to Earth hour!
@Chirag – You’re welcome.
Your French pardoned. As for Varun, he is either a moron or super smart. I see all sorts of conspiracy theories being proposed.

Nano is going to bring Indian roads down on its knees. Its going to crumble the already choked up roads. Somehow, the whole idea gives me the creeps.
