The New India

By

The other day i was listening to the radio while returning from the office after the regular grind, and came across this very interesting exchange.

So this guy called up the RJ (Radio Jockey), and they were talking. Bhai saab was an MBA student from FMS (which by the way, is one of the top management schools in India).

RJ: So what are you planning to do after your MBA?
Bhai Saab: Bas yaar, ek achhi si ladki chahiye. A nice girl to marry.
RJ: Abe so you dont need a job. A wife is all you need?
Bhai Saab: Yaar job to mil hi jayega, but finding a nice girl is more important.
RJ: Ok. Well, good luck. So who do you want to dedicate this sing to?
Bhai Saab: That would be my girl friend. (Said very matter of factly)
RJ: WTF! If you have a girl friend, then why worrying so much about finding a wife?
Bhai Saab: Arre, she is just a girl friend. Shaadi ke liye to i need a nice girl.

Me: Gasp!

Maybe i am too old to understand this thinking, but nevertheless, WTF! Is this how our youth thinks these days?

Haha! Don’t generalize it, but some boys do marry their girlfriends. :)
While some patao a girl for some timepass and kisses and dump her when they are about to get married. :)

yes! This is totally true and I am surprised that you found that out just now! There are so many SOBs who just need an ‘item’ to show off to their friends but when it comes to choosing their wife, they need a Surf-se dhula hua tulsi patta type who has (hopefully) never associated with any guys (read: virgin)!! There’s nothing ‘new about this!!

This is not new Indian thinking, it’s been around for at least two decades. “Good girlfriend material” is not equal to “good wife material” is a common saying among the youth.

My observation is that this attitude was more prevalent a few years ago than it is now, though it does still exist widely.

heard of the adage…girlfriend material….wife material.. i thought it was a pretty common comment among us friends even 8 years ago in India.

India hasnt changed much in some senses ;)

and then the same guys eye other women after marying “the pure” girl their mothers chose! it gets funnier when you catch up with old friends and drop clangers,” hello X”, and then you realise he has married Y! age old excuse, ” har ladki mein tumhey hi dhoond raha tha, darling!” ( i was searching for you in every girl, darling). you must have surely come across guys who marry local girls in western countries while having wives back home. one man married his middle-aged landlady in new york, went home and came back with a scared young thing from his village, wife number 2, and passed her off as his cousin! shameful! so, things haven’t changed et al. girls are smarter now, they meet up with the parents after a few dates.

lolz, actually I should not be laughing at this but yes my dear friend, this is how youth thinks.
One of my colleagues, when I used to work for some other company, said he will get a lot of money as dowry because he is an engineer, now he has lost his job and his rates are down by 25-40 percent :D
He plans to do MBA to increase his rates.
    Cheers, Keep Writing :)

Hmm. And yes, i think i am very old now !

The RJ should have asked him:
    Kindly define “nice girl”..
    Is it virgin?
    Is it homely?
    Is it well-educated?
    Is it rich?
    Is it tall, fair, good-looking?
    Is it non-smoking and teetotaler?
    :o
    No words honestly!!

Its nice to see so many people sharing my views else I used to feel I am either idealistic or too traditional for my times

  14. Smitha on August 28, 2009 at 10:59 am

    Such creeps do exist!

  15. Akshay on August 29, 2009 at 4:14 am

You guys use a stupid RJ-bhaisaab exchange to make generalizations about hundreds of millions of “youth” ??!!!
That guy could be bluffing , or he may not be a bhaisaab at all! ;)

There are such blockheads everywhere. Maybe there are more of such jerks here, but no need to dramatize every third experience as some indication of “degeneration of values” or whatever florid rhetoric you guys use.

AD, I absolutely understand what you want to say. Young boys and girls have tried to explain this to me so many times but I couldn’t yet understand the concept of a boyfriend or girlfriend if you don’t intend to marry. It is ok if you break up after you realise that you are not compatible but the basic intent while making a boyfriend or girlfriend used to be that you are interested in marrying each other, if not then you are friends. Like you, I also think, maybe I am too old to understand this!

    Guys, thanks for the comments.

My point was not to generalize and say that this is how everybody behaves, but what caught me by surprise was the utter nonchalance with which this person, a highly educated professional, talked of the fact that his girlfriend wasn’t good enough to be a wife.

Generalization or not, i have every right to be shocked if out of the blue i hear this exchange on a medium followed by many millions of people. These are not the values we (i) grew up with.

me too hopes she dumped him.

[…] kids to be raised with Indian values, and boy will you be in for a shock? Indian kids seem to have left America somewhere behind. Get your priorities right, and then decide on what you want to […]

Don’t let anyone tell you or convince you otherwise. This is exactly how it is still in India and no it is no generalization. If anyone says so, I challenge them to go and interview a cross section and prove that at least half of them would agree (at least verbally) that girl friends are marriage material. The exceptions are far and too few to even take notice of. The youngest of young generation too hold this view, a girl friend is one and a good wife another! The college students interviewed on TV openly admit it (yes nonchalantly is the word). And my son who is still a student says with some disbelief that most of his friends subscribe to this view.

I bookmarked this web address a while ago because of the new content and I have never been disappointed. Continue the quality work.

Well this is very true of the India that we live in today but may I also say that it works both ways. Even the girls these days want a badass as their bf but a nice boy for marriage. I read other stuff on your blog too and am thoroughly enjoying the posts. Keep them coming!!
