This is exactly how it is still in India and no it is no generalization. If anyone says so, I challenge them to go and interview a cross section and prove that at least half of them would agree (at least verbally) that girl friends are marriage material. The exceptions are far and too few to even take notice of. The youngest of young generation too hold this view, a girl friend is one and a good wife another! The college students interviewed on TV openly admit it (yes nonchalantly is the word). And my son who is still a student says with some disbelief that most of his friends subscribe to this view. Young boys and girls have tried to explain this to me so many times but I couldn't yet understand the concept of a boyfriend or girlfriend if you don't intend to marry. It is ok if you break up after you realise that you are not compatible but the basic intent while making a boyfriend or girlfriend used to be that you are interested in marrying each other, if not then you are friends.
