this sitting of Indian style on a western lavatory is endemic in Singapore too. Not that Indians are responsible, but its the Chinese from China who also seem to do it that way.

What about the ‘hovering’ technique? Thats what shld be used in all public western style loos . And this gets you a bonus – super strong thigh muscles !

Yes, I have also seen these signs during my visits in India and I understand why too. Like Sachi above, I have seen scraped footprints on a western toilet seat, which can mean only one thing… Personally, I dont care what kind of loos are provided as long as it doesnt make me walk on tiptoes, trying to keep my clothes from touching any wall, while holding my nose and hoping flies dont get into my mouth(yes, that happened on the way to Tirupathi).
I think a lot of it has to do with Ignorance on how to use it and how much is spent on maintainence.

Indians do do this and I think at times it is because they do not know how to use the western style toilet and other reason is that they feel it is not hygienic. I don’t know which reason predominates as I personally do not know anyone who does it. But I do know people who keep complaining of the unhygienic western style toilets. Sadly, in the bargain, they dirty the toilets and make it actually unhygienic for use by others. They also tend to drop water all around. I agree with the commentator who says that Indian style toilets should be provided. I think this is a must.

There are twin loos. That can serve as both Indian and Western style closets ! I will someday click and send you a picture of that !

But you can so clearly see sometimes that people have tried to squat on toilet bowl rims. Shoe prints on toilet bowl rims? Can only mean one thing. I’d be afraid of taking a spill (pun!) too.

@Ugich – Welcome to Amreekandesi! That’s a good point about having both types of toilets. I guess the maintainence of Indian toilets is higher because of all the water involved?

@AmListening – Why should it be good? If Indians cant behave with discipline at a store checkout counter, it is nothing to be proud of. Similarly, if highly educated Indians working at the most elite companies use the toilets in such a manner, i find it embarrassing.

@QI – Yaar, I should check that post of yours – cant seem to recollect. But still, what’s wrong with using the potty the way it is intended to be used?

@Naveen – Interesting. The curiosity is piqued. Now if only i could see a picture!

@Saachi – Yups…that will not be a graceful fall, at all!

@MS – Very insightful! I think i need to find myself a nice karate instructor. One who has seen karate kid, hopefully.

remember “karate kid”? there is this scene where the master teaches the kid to balance on poles at a beach. something “balancing crane”. that is the trick to using ANY toilet in india!! what most advocates of the indian toilet don’t understand is the splash-up factor. also, after a certain age, knee joints give up the ghost. i don’t understand women – they have yards of their sari brushing thru every imaginable surface and then get queazy when it comes to sitting on a perfectly clean seat!! what about the scientists’ discovery – more germs on lift buttons, keyboards than on your average toilet seat!
