Who’s The Slumdog Now?

Dear Danny Boyle,

We heard that you left India in a rush because you were ‘really, really tired‘. What happened? Did you happen to travel in a Mumbai local train?

We are sure it couldnt be related to the fact that your child stars wanted some more from you. All Azharuddin wanted was a car. And Rubina, an additional $48,000 for an apartment in Bandra. What’s so bad about it?

Its simple. You made a movie about India’s poverty and the movie ended up making some $300mn. These kids should have gotten money but you took them to Hollywood, Disneyland etc, and then told them to go to school. WTF! These kids are stars now. Stars dont go to school.

Why cant Rubina live in a house in Bandra West? The kid calls you Danny Uncle and you really want her to live in Vikhroli? Vikhroli?

    The kids were paid money, but their parents ate it. there is some fund into which some money has been put for the kids with the condition that they can take it only if they finish education and reach some 21 odd years of age.

    i dont see anything wrong with it. I dont think Danny Boyle needs to feel bad about the kids status now or for the fact that he should lose sleep over it. He did the best he could for the kids.

    Danny Boyle should have finished the movie and gone home. Period.

    Ofcourse, stars dont go to school. And Vikhroli is an uninhabitable jungle infested with pythons and demons.

    What crap.

    Why point fingers at Danny Boyle ? All he did was make a film. Didnt force you to pay for a ticket and watch it. Our politicians pretend to work for us, make a show of worrying and trying the solve the ordinary mans woes, and then make millions , enough to stash them in Swiss banks, Liberian mines, and stuff in Thailand.

    The children from the film have a trust fund working for them. They are doing a decent job, insisting that the children attend school.

    And Bandra West may be more heard of outside Mumbai, but please, why rundown Vikhroli ? Its a perfectly fine place, with all the conveniences life needs, schools colleges, hospitals. Maybe no fancy eating places costing an arm and a leg, and people who think wearing clothes is about protection and not about exposing….

    I must protest this derrogatory mention of Vikhroli …..

    I guess some lines in your post are completely out of context…

    First of all, the kids r hardly stars…they are not even actors. They just got lucky and are ONE-MOVIE-WONDER (as of now) and moreover, the role they portrayed was minuscule compared to the totality of the entire movie. In fact the other kids had meatier role but were shadowed by the media for the only reason they weren’t slum-dwellers.

    Secondly, like Philip surmised that they were paid money as usual but their parents misappropriated it. So Danny Boyle is not the villain here… their parents are. Boyle, on the other hand has been chivalrous with the whole affair. He visited Mumbai in spite of having nothing to gain from it. He even created a fund for them that ensures financially sound future! What’s wrong with school? They are slum kids n education will definitely help them. We must remember that the boy who played “Chai Pau” in Salaam Bombay is driving rickshaw on Bangalore streets today. So compared to him, these kids got a better deal.

    Thirdly, Vikhroli isn’t a bad place to live at all… n Bandra isn’t the only place in Mumbai that’s suited to humankind n v r talking abt kids who had a leaking roof till Slumdog happened!

    ‘There’s more to India than Slumdog’ – says a person or two. Mr. Fanny Doyle can do what he wants, he’s got the money now and he’s not coming back. Ever.

    Frankly I don’t see why danny Boyle should pay the kids extra. They were just actors. If he has to do charity, he can pay for all the kids in that slum. There was a lot of heartburn amongst the slumdwellers out there. It is so unfair that one kid gets so much more than he deserves (actor’s fee) and other kids are left there to rot.

    I am still mad at him for showing India is such a negative light – as if there are any slums in India, or any poverty. And now this exploitation of Indian kids! Chee chee Dannyji.

    @thefob – Who?

    @Philip – I hear you, and needless to say – i agree.

    @Solilo – :)

    @Kavi – There you go. No wonder these kids couldnt bear the thought of a Rs 20 lakh apartment in Vikhroli.

    @Ugich – I wonder if you are being sarcastic. I certainly was.

    @Shakti – I think you missed the sarcasm. I think these people are out to extract as much as they can out of this opportunity. Danny Boyle tried to do a good deed but is just being harassed.

    @Munish – Good point. These kids were hired for a salary, now if Danny tried to give them something extra that doesnt mean that he is obliged to satisfy all of their needs.

    @Roshni – That’s the big problem with sarcasm sometimes :)

    @Nita – Yes, i agree.

    @QI – Come on…gussa thook do. He will learn eventually.

    @Chikki – “why are all of us discrediting Danny Boyle completely?” – I dont think so! ;)

    he came, he saw, he selected. then he came again, saw again, patted them on head, left. end of story. aamir khan does not have to give the “taare zameen par” child artistes a home, a car, a college fund. ditto shekhar kapur when he made “mr india”. why do we expect largesse from the western world? because we see them as a soft touch? there were hundreds of children who lost their homes when their illegal dwellings were pulled down. why concentrate on the plight of these 2 non-actors? why did not the maharashtra govt step in? we are not voting danny boyle into office. and the limits the parents of these 2 children’s parents crossed – spreading rumours of selling them amd beating them, all to squeeze the last tear from “gora” eyes. shameful!
