82 year old Prahlad Jani is a remarkable man, if his claim of living for the past 70 years without any food or water is true.
Mr Jani, who claims to have left home aged seven and lived as a wandering sadhu or holy man in Rajasthan, is regarded as a ‘breatharian’ who can live on a ‘spiritual life-force’ alone. He believes he is sustained by a goddess who pours an ‘elixir’ through a hole in his palate. [link]
Our scientists (DRDO, no less) are on the case now, trying to figure out what makes this man work. They hope to use this knowledge towards helping soldiers or disaster victims wait just that much longer before help arrives.
There’s two possible outcomes, none of them promising. They could end up proving this man to be a fraud who sneaks in a chocolate every now and then. In this case the scientists end up looking like idiots wasting their time on a worthless pursuit. The other possibility is that Jani is indeed on a different plane where food/water holds no meaning. In this case, not very likely that an X-ray will provide much information to the boys from DRDO.
For now he is being kept under observation to confirm his claims. Guilty, until proven special.
So far, Mr Prahlad appears to be standing up to scrutiny. He has not eaten or drunk any fluids in six days, and similarly has not passed urine or a stool in that time. He remains fit and healthy and shows no sign of lethargy. Doctors will continue observing him for 15 days in which time they would expect to see some muscle wastage, serious dehydration, weight loss, and fatigue followed by organ failure.
For some reason, i am reminded of those scientists from Independence Day, gleefully cutting open the slimy alien body (only to meet a tragic end shortly thereafter)

This isn’t even the first time they are studying him. Some doctors observed him for 10 days in 2003, and at the end of the period he had lost a little weight..

If they indeed find the way to be without food, would you be able to be without food? Hunger is one thing. Taste is another! If nothing, we eat for taste and in variety. And once we start eating for taste then we would want to eat more and more. The solution is not that simple.

Dinesh – Taste is fine, but they are talking about survival here. A soldier stranded behind enemy lines wouldn’t care much about enjoying his meals as long as he can stay alive!
