For many childless couples all over the world, India is becoming the go-to place. We may have started off outsourcing software development, but now we are reaching new avenues.
This is outsourcing taken to a new level. We are now outsourcing little babies.
Cant have kids? No problemo. We can do that for you.
And Anand is apparently at the center of it all.
Welcome to Anand, the milk capital of India and the surrogacy capital of the world, where women rent out their wombs to childless couples from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, Israel, Philippines, Turkey and even Iceland. The fame of this small town has spread so far and wide that when Oprah Winfrey dedicated one of her shows to the business of renting wombs, she zeroed in on Anand despite the fact that surrogacy is legally offered in many countries. [link]
Anand has a 300-member community of surrogates, and offers IVF treatment with surrogacy for Rs 7 lakh — in the US, it costs a whopping Rs 60 lakh.
The surrogates get paid at least Rs 3 lakh (USD 7000), and get a monthly stipend in addition. The extra money helps, providing these underprivileged women with much needed financial independence/stability.
Business is so good, sometimes they get return customers.
After spending about $20,000 – more than many couples because it took the surrogate mother several cycles to conceive – Sodhi and her husband are now back home with their 4-month-old baby, Neel. They plan to return to Anand for a second child. [link]
It’s all about empowerment, apparently. Of course, everybody wins. The childless become parents. These women get the moolah. India gets another outsourcing title.
Exploitation of poor women? Abuse of a developing country’s aspirations? Not sure about that.
In other oursourcing news, Barclays bank plans to outsource the task of collecting dues from customers to call center agents in India, who will buzz customers in the UK ‘incessantly demanding payments’.
“Pay back your money, or you will see. Saale, dont mess with Barclays bank”
“Haha…look Ma, there’s a man on the phone with a funny accent trying to threaten us!”

Recently had a personal experience with collection procedure so reminded of the same. Do read “Devil in Pinstripes” at leisure…it touches the same veins.

I read the article, Wombs for Rent and it certainly was very informative! Personally, I agree with that author in wishing that adoption could be considered an option more objectively. Also, I saw the Oprah show and although they were very careful not to use the word ‘exploit’ anywhere, it certainly seemed like that to me.

Exploit – certainly a very sensitive word.
And very relevant in the modern world. We are all getting exploited in multiple ways. I could rant at good length on this topic

Indians can outsource anything
But have the white parents thought about the psychological feelings of a darker kid when they grow up?

It will not be a darker kid, Liju. The surrogate is just a carrier for the child.

@ Liju Philip I’m no science wiz but I think the egg and sperm still is of the parents .Its just the womb that they are renting. so the physical traits of the surrogate won’t affect the baby in anyway. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I agree with you…the kid will have whatever traits her (genetic) parents pass on.

The use of shock value to attract clients is an old strategy. But before copying it blindly for your article headline, you should think what kind of blog u want here – one that attracts viewers that are not-so-shocked by ur title (who in turn are the kinds that wont put an effort into improving the society coz they are insensitive in the first place) or ones that are put off by ur blog and dont wanna return here (they can & do but wont be able to make a difference coz they never went through ur article).
Increase ur awareness of the sensitivity of the grounds u are traversing.
All this to be taken in a +ve light.

“you should think what kind of blog u want here”
You’ve opened my eyes. Obviously i am unaware of what i am doing; please help o knowledgeable one.
BTW what’s wrong with the headline? It translates pretty literally. The post was about people who cant have kids and end up using somebody else’s body for the purpose. This somebody else happens to be in a third world country and would provide her services for much cheaper than what it would cost elsewhere. That’s Outsourcing.

Im really sorry if i came across as insensitive.
Sorry.
You are obviously just sharing some news here. And I notice that you say …..”Not sure about that”.
However im inclined to make a few observations:
- My comment was not actually abt firing at u personally. I know that feedback is best when addressing a specific topic and even better if it included +ve suggestions. And thats what my comment was abt – ur headline (that its insensitive). Oh look theres even a +ve suggestion in it(joking!) – that if you want u can make ur blog such that it also talks to & doesnt repel the sensitive ones.
- Sadly many of my fellow countrymen are insensitive (or have been made by the society or whatever) and thats why many issues are just waiting to be addressed that would shock someone from the west. Im not saying insensitivity is THE root cause of many of our problems – but just that its one of the root causes.
- My habit of diving for the ‘real thing’ combined with a hurry in posting comment meant that i left out the connecting/humane/courteous part.
- Im not a knowledgeable one (but i will accept the compliment – O humble one!). And will never be treated like a big one ever!
- Many of us Indians are kind of connected. I mean if u’ve lived in america then u know that they can easily be disconnected from each other and just say – “well its ur story. mine is different. I dont care etc etc”
Not so here.
Thus whatever u say to others will affect them and so this becomes not just sharing news but affecting ppl as well.
- Now, whats wrong with the headline? It made me feel sick. But maybe thats just me. But just try to feel this once – a child & birth & these things are pretty close to divine. The experience is so personal…and u dont wanna think abt this & the corporate style of ‘cost cutting’ in the same thought – u wanna keep the Corporate machinery miles away from these personal things. And the corporations are almost always mean to a man of third world – and now this!
..i cant write .. dont wanna think abt it.
God bless
