Mera Bharat Mahan
I wrote a poem titled Mera Bharat Mahaan sometime in middle school, and remember submitting it for the school annual magazine. The class teacher pretty much rubbished me, implying that there was no way i had written the poem myself. (It was that good, apparently!)
I don’t recall the exact poem myself, but here’s a similar version. The poem is in Hindi, so apologies to readers who don’t understand the language.
Translating into English would not recreate the magic, so not doing that for now. If you would like a translated version, drop me a comment.
Here we go – Mera Bharat Mahaan
Hamari sabhyata ka sab karte bakhaan
Duniya bhar mein hai iska gungaan
Ye desh jo hai hum sab ki shaan
Mera Bharat MahaanNeta hamare sabse balwaan
Kabhi nahi rukte unke koi kaam
Life mein unko hai poora aaraam
Mera Bharat MahaanAam aadmi ki zindagi sasti
Rookhi sookhi si iski basti
Karna padta ise pet ke liye kaam
Mera Bharat MahaanGandhi ne diya hamen ahinsa ka paath
Humne kaat diye ek doosre ke haath
Bapu ka bas rah gaya naam
Mera Bharat MahaanPadosi mulkon se lagatar ghamasan
Dharm ke naam pe marta insaan
Neta hamare ban gaye haiwan
Mera Bharat MahaanHindi Cheeni Bhai Bhai
China ne fir missile chalayi
Shanti ka de diya pramaan
Mera Bharat Kitna MahaanSoftware mein kari tarakki
Pokhran mein dikhayi shakti
Uda diya humne Chandrayaan
Mera Bharat MahaanNaye yug mein jagrati aayi
Bhartiyon mein rashtriyata samaayi
Desh ka badhne laga sammaan
Mera Bharat really Mahaan

How old am i? Here’s two clues:
1. If Ramalinga Raju is convicted and gets to spend a decade in jail, then when he comes out he will be twice as old as me one year less than half that time from now.
2. Seven years ago my age was equal to the number of months emergency lasted in India, circa Indira Gandhi.

Whoa! I’m not surprised the teacher didn’t believe you. I still didnt understand some words! I think I’m starting to believe that writing poetry in hindi is quite a talent, one that i clearly don’t possess! Great stuff

Nicely done. I can understand why the teachers wouldnt believe…
. Now that last stanza, I want that for a reality… but first we need to really look at what all the development means to a common man and also learn more about Atma-samaan and swa-abhiman before others give us Samaan..

@somebody – Welcome to Amreekandesi! Well, i did not write this exact same poem 15 years back. I wrote it this week, so ISRO has no reason to fear me!
And yes, that is a cool feature i added some time back…comes in handy in case you want to correct some typos or html errors, or just change the comment!
