Mera Bharat Mahan

January 22, 2009

I wrote a poem titled  Mera Bharat Mahaan sometime in middle school, and remember submitting it for the school annual magazine. The class teacher pretty much rubbished me,  implying that there was no way i had written the poem myself. (It was that good, apparently!)

I don’t recall the exact poem myself, but here’s a similar version. The poem is in Hindi, so apologies to readers who don’t understand the language.

Translating into English would not recreate the magic, so not doing that for now. If you would like a translated version, drop me a comment.

Here we go - Mera Bharat Mahaan

Hamari sabhyata ka sab karte bakhaan
Duniya bhar mein hai iska gungaan
Ye desh jo hai hum sab ki shaan
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Neta hamare sabse balwaan
Kabhi nahi rukte unke koi kaam
Life mein unko hai poora aaraam
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Aam aadmi ki zindagi sasti
Rookhi sookhi si iski basti
Karna padta ise pet ke liye kaam
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Gandhi ne diya hamen ahinsa ka paath
Humne kaat diye ek doosre ke haath
Bapu ka bas rah gaya naam
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Padosi mulkon se lagatar ghamasan
Dharm ke naam pe marta insaan
Neta hamare ban gaye haiwan
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Hindi Cheeni Bhai Bhai
China ne fir missile chalayi
Shanti ka de diya pramaan
Mera Bharat Kitna Mahaan

Software mein kari tarakki
Pokhran mein dikhayi shakti
Uda diya humne Chandrayaan
Mera Bharat Mahaan

Naye yug mein jagrati aayi
Bhartiyon mein rashtriyata samaayi
Desh ka badhne laga sammaan
Mera Bharat really Mahaan

Lol, I can imagine you as kiddo writing this so enthusiastically … How old r u by the way??? Lol.. :)

  8. amreekandesi on January 23, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    @Vijay, @Me Singh, @Lata and @Reema - Thanks for the appreciation

@Dinesh - Thanks. Balwaan just means powerful, but sure, politics in India is much like a wrestling game.

    @Oxy - Welcome to Amreekandesi!

How old am i? Here’s two clues:

    1. If Ramalinga Raju is convicted and gets to spend a decade in jail, then when he comes out he will be twice as old as me one year less than half that time from now.
    2. Seven years ago my age was equal to the number of months emergency lasted in India, circa Indira Gandhi.

you need to sue isro for copyright violation on chandrayaan. would’ve worked wonders in the land of the (atlanta) braves.

    - s.b.

p.s.: i wonder if that is why oxy was asking your age :-). how old is raju now? ;-)

Whoa! I’m not surprised the teacher didn’t believe you. I still didnt understand some words! I think I’m starting to believe that writing poetry in hindi is quite a talent, one that i clearly don’t possess! Great stuff :D

      yes i support to u

  12. Mysoul on January 25, 2009 at 1:20 am

Nicely done. I can understand why the teachers wouldnt believe… :). Now that last stanza, I want that for a reality… but first we need to really look at what all the development means to a common man and also learn more about Atma-samaan and swa-abhiman before others give us Samaan..

@somebody - Welcome to Amreekandesi! Well, i did not write this exact same poem 15 years back. I wrote it this week, so ISRO has no reason to fear me!
And yes, that is a cool feature i added some time back…comes in handy in case you want to correct some typos or html errors, or just change the comment!

@Shivya - Thanks for the appreciation!

@Mysoul - Thanks. I too am hoping to see a growing sense of nationalism. Only when we respect ourselves can we expect the world to take us seriously.

awesome..even i don’t think you have written it yourself!!!!

  16. prerna on January 27, 2009 at 11:09 pm

You can’t blame the teacher, the poem is too good to be written by someone in middle school.

Doha: Jay netaa gan raj niti ke

    Tumko karoo pranaam

    Tumhi vidhataa anyayee ke

    Karo chaapluso kaam

Chaupayee: Jay atyachaar ke netaa gan

Tum mohe ho sab ke man

    Sab chamacho ki karo bhalayee

    We chaahe jitani kare buarayee

    Unhe aanch na aane paaye

    Tumhari kurshi bhale hijaaye

    Bhrathachaar me tum aage ho

    Awgun kari ke dhaage ho

    Ghapla jhagra tum karwaate

    Sahi jano ko yoo marwaate

    Rajniti ke bane pujari

    Tum toshi ki karo rakhwari

    Jurm karwaane me mahir ho

    Chor uchakkoo me shamil ho

    Dhanya-dhanya bharat ke veer

    Bholi janata pe maro teer

    Kya kurshi ka khail nirala

    Hardam odhe raho dushala

Paiso ki tumako bhookh lagee hai

    Baimani ki peer jagi hai

    Kab tak aise chalegaa kaam

    Ek din hogaa satyanash

Tab hath jor kar nahi bacho ge

Sab dekhe ge tum jald pisoge

Doha: Bhagwan aisi bya chala do

    Atyachaar ho jaaye kam

    Rajniti ke baimano ka

Fir bharat me ho na janm
